Transnational Challenges

Countering organised crime and slavery

Our Transnational Challenges Practice leads Aktis’ programming on migration and transnational organised crime.

We support donors and our in-house implementing teams with the development of evidence-based solutions to help reduce harm to vulnerable migrants and communities and to counter organised crime and slavery. We do this by bringing together in-house technical expertise, an extensive roster of close associates and a wide-reaching network of local partners and research institutions.

Examples of work

Promoting informed migration decision-making

  • Aktis and our partners are helping migrants to make more informed decisions about their migration journeys through community engagement and communications campaigns. Our team have also delivered research into migrant decision-making across a number of major migration routes through West, North and East Africa, as well as delivered innovative monitoring and evaluation of our impact and reach.

Improving resilience of displaced populations

  • Aktis is facilitating monitoring, evaluation and lessons learning to improve the resilience and stability of migrating and displaced populations in North-East Nigeria, helping field teams to reflect and to adapt to the changing context and promote and integrate best practice into programming.

  • In Lebanon, Aktis is conducting research to identify emerging trends and monitor tensions between Lebanese host communities and Syrian refugees. By building a longitudinal evidence base, Aktis is helping to create a common understanding of community problems to improve interventions that address tensions resulting from cross-border movements.

Supporting a participatory approach to border management

  • With an emphasis on inclusivity and participation, Aktis strengthened government and communities’ capacity to jointly manage border security in Mali. Through in-depth needs assessments, ongoing political economy analyses and direct and sustained engagement, Aktis helped to co-design initiatives at the local level, and facilitated strategic planning at the national level.
